Your Key to Safety

A well-prepared fire escape plan can save lives during an emergency. Every home and building should have a clear, practiced escape route for all occupants. The crews at Jerome Township Division of fire encourages all residents to develop and regularly review their fire escape plans.

Here's what your fire escape plan should enclude

          1.  Two Escape Routes:

  • Ensure there are at least two ways out of every room, including bedrooms.
  • If one escape route is blocked, you can use the other.

          2.  Designate a meeting spot:

  • Choose a safe, easily accessible location outside your home, such as a neighbor's yard or a mailbox.
  • Ensure everyone knows to meet there after escaping, so everyone can be accounted for.

          3.  Practice Regular Drills:

  • Conduct fire drills with your family or household members at least twice a year.
  • Practice hot to exit safely, especially for young children, elderly family members, or anyone with mobility challenges

          4.  Ensure Clear Paths:

  • Keep exit routes clear of obstacles such as furniture, clutter, or decorations.
  • Make sure windows, doors and ladders can be easily opened.

          5.  Know How to Call for Help:

  • Teach all family members how to dial 911 in case of an emergency.
  • Be ready to provide the 911 operator with your location, any details about the fire, and the status of everyone in the house.

          6.  Special Considerations:

  • If anyone in your home has mobility issues, make specific plans to assist them in an emergency.
  • Consider fire safety equipment like fire ladders for upper-floor windows or smoke alarms in every room.

           7.  Plan for Pets:

  • Include your pets in your escape plan by designating someone to assist them in an emergency.
